What’s Happening Here

November 18, 2013

Brio is very sick. She’s only five years old, but she is dying of chronic kidney disease. Some days are better than others, though there are few really good ones any more. When the scales tip a bit more, which will probably be soon, she will be given a humane exit.

Right now she still guards the house, still thinks nothing is as fascinating as new traces of dog pee on the grasses alongside the trail since her last visit to the island across the river (though her journeys there are shorter and shorter), still likes turkey and chicken (but not so much today; no food pleases her today), and she continues to believe that giving her a full body massage is the best possible way for me to spend my time.

She enjoys greeting friends. She sleeps a lot. Really a lot. She forgets to drink water so I give her subcutaneous fluids to flush out her kidneys.

My apologies for letting the blog posts slip. Alice worries all the time about Brio, but she continues to have adventures and I really want to write them. I’ve just been so preoccupied. Thank you for your patience.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this! Losing a beloved pet is tough, and, losing two in such a short time must be devastating.

I wish there were something I could say, or some magical little spell that I could send you that would help you find strength, and help ease the loss … but, alas, there is no such magic.

You and Brio are in our thoughts…

Big hugs, and much love from us here in CO…..

its amazing how much having an animal grabs at your heart… we all understand why you have been absent, and I am sending to you, with all the others, a huge hug and thoughts of positivity to you… its very very very hard to agree when a little dog has to leave… Brio obviously knows how much you love her and doing that body massage must ease her pain a lot…. I do not envy your having to say goodbye, but we are all thinking of you and your wonderful mother , who’s escapades keep us enthralled** hugs from across the pond..

  32. I’m so very sorry, Andrea. I still miss my dogs. They saved me after my divorce. I’m just now opening my heart to the idea of another dog. I wish as many as possible good times for you and Brio.

  33. Hi Andrea, have just been reading your latest posts. I didn’t realise poor Brio was so ill. Animals take a piece of one’s heart every time. I do feel for you. We are going to look for another dog after Christmas, a friend for Flossie who definitely misses Keano. She hasn’t made the grade as a watch dog so I am looking for one that will bark! Take care X

  34. Thank you everyone for all of these kind messages. What a tender-hearted, loving, sensitive and caring group you are. I feel so fortunate to have this connection with you all.

Ever since Brio died on November 23rd, I haven’t been able to get back to writing. It’s been very cold. My house is a little ice box floating on the river. We all have our winter stories now, including Alice. I hope to post something this week. Thank you again for your compassion.
